Sunderland brothers Craig and Simon Thompson are pooling nearly half a century of expertise to launch their own independent family firm of funeral directors.

Craig Thompson went straight into the trade from school before brother Simon followed in his footsteps a few years later.

The Wearside brothers built their reputations working for one of the city’s leading funeral directors.

And now they feel the time is right to launch their own business, focusing on a grass roots community approach.

The brothers were raised in Washington before returning to their family roots in Grindon where the pair are well known within the local community.  They are looking to build on those strong bonds to build their new venture.

Craig said: “In recent years the trend has been for larger corporate companies to buy up some of the long-established family ran firms.

“The time is now right for us to use our experience to launch a service that family, friends and the community will be proud of.  We also feel this is the best way to continue to give a personal and tailored service.”

The new firm, Thompson Brothers and Sons, is based in Westbourne Terrace, Shiney Row from where they will serve both Sunderland and the surrounding area.

Simon Thompson added: “People may have read recently in the national press about sky rocketing funeral costs, but we pride ourselves on being able to look after all families in their hour of need.”
